Meet the Instructors
We are proud to have two very accomplished music teachers inspiring students in our Band, Orchestra and Choir ensembles at Whitman.
Joel Orsen studied music education at the University of Washington. Mr. Orsen has directed Band and Jazz Band at Whitman since 2008. When not teaching, Mr. Orsen is very active performing with professional and volunteer music groups, including the Seattle Sounders Soundwave Marching Band, the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline, and the University of Washington Alumni Band. If you see Mr. Orsen at a game come say Hi!
Lauren Hepburn completed her studies in music education at Central Washington University in the fall of 2011 and has been teaching in Seattle Public Schools ever since. Starting as a substitute teacher she then went to work at Broadview-Thomson K-8 teaching band and orchestra for two years and is now happily residing at Whitman. Ms. Hepburn can be seen performing with the Washington Wind Symphony, Northwest Symphony Orchestra, and playing jazz saxophone around Seattle.

About Music at Whitman Middle School
The Whitman Music Program has grown exponentially in the past five years and is an unqualified success! This success is due to its fabulous directors and the continuing support of its parent community.
Friends of Whitman Music is committed to supporting music education and to providing all students with an opportunity to explore music at Whitman. We welcome any parents, guardians, and community members who want to join us in our efforts.
Each year, we have various fundraising campaigns, such as bake sales at concerts, tee shirt sales, solicitation of private/corporate donations, and seeking out sponsorship and grants. In addition to raising money, we always need volunteers to help out at concerts, photograph and video performances, chaperone field trips, and bake and sell baked goods at the concerts.
At the beginning of the school year, we also ask the music teachers to provide a wish list of items that they need for their program. An individual or group can purchase items on the list and donate the item to the program directly, or they can solicit music stores and other businesses to donate to the Whitman Music Program. Gently used items can be donated as well.
